Our History

Helping Hand has been the first point of contact in Bandera County for families in crisis for the past 21 years. Helping Hand was founded in 1983 by Comellia Rue and area church leaders who saw the need to provide a central and unified safety net for area families.

Our first home was a rented facility on Highway 16. This building is now occupied by Radio Shack.

The first building we owned was donated to us in 1988. The 4,300 square foot building was moved to county property and we had a lease agreement with the county for $1.00 a year.  Volunteers completely remodeled the building in 2001. We resided here until the flood of July 2002. We were just one of the many casualties of the flood. The Board of Directors met to decide whether to continue and try to rebuild or to disband. The decision was unanimous to rebuild. The Bandera County Commissioners’ Court provided us with temporary housing at Mansfield Park.

Through lots of faith and prayer we have been able to build the beautiful 6,000 sq. ft. facility that you see below. The land and the building were completely paid for through donations and grants.
